What to take with you when going to paddle with SUP board?

SUP is gaining popularity each year. Currently, the variety of paddle boarding activities is extensive, ranging from easy paddling in the lake to nighttime tours exploring the underwater world or even expeditions on fast-moving rivers filled with challenges.

An advantage of paddle boarding is that it can be enjoyed by both young and older individuals, as physical fitness isn't the primary factor. The range of activities available allows you to select one that best matches your physical condition.

While engaging in any paddleboarding activity, it is crucial to remember your safety and that of your loved ones. Therefore, we are providing tips on equipment and the essential items that are necessary when paddleboarding.

  • LEASH

The leash is the number one and most important attribute for ensuring safety when paddling. It must be attached to the leg (no matter which one) as soon as you enter the water and put the paddleboard on, and it must be attached in this way throughout the all paddling. There are different types of leashes, some are straight, others are spiral-shaped. Straight leashes are most often used at sea, while spiral leashes are used when paddling in inland waters, i.e. rivers and lakes.

  • PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE

A personal flotation device, or PFD, is essential for paddling, especially for those who lack confidence in their swimming skills, as it is designed to keep a person afloat in case of an accident. It's important not to confuse life jackets with PFDs, as they serve different purposes. There are various types of PFDs, so selecting the appropriate one is crucial for enjoying paddling. Opting for a standard life jacket can make paddling challenging, as it restricts arm movement and makes it difficult to turn your head. PFD vests are more compact, allowing for easier movement and maintaining a wide field of vision.

DRINKING WATER

While paddling, you are likely to become hot and thirsty. Regardless of the day's temperature, it's crucial to have drinking water with you during any physical activity, even if your paddling is just a light, fun activity. Even if you intend to paddle for only an hour, having water is beneficial, as unexpected situations might occur, causing delays, or the wind may increase, requiring more effort and making you thirstier faster.

On hot summer days, it's crucial to keep your body properly hydrated to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones. Even if you're only paddling for an hour, bring a water bottle along. Ensure the bottle is airtight and secure it to the cords at the front of the paddleboard. We suggest using a thermos bottle to maintain the water's temperature for an extended period.

  • WATERPROOF BAG

When paddling, it's advisable to bring snacks so you have something to eat if you get hungry. However, snacks aren't the only items we suggest taking along. It's just as crucial to bring a hat, even if the sun isn't out when you start, as it can appear at any moment, making it vital to protect yourself from overheating. Remember to carry necessary medications, ensuring you have those for allergies, like insect bites, or other health conditions. We suggest placing your hat, along with sunscreen and snacks, in a waterproof bag, which should be secured behind the cargo ropes at the front of the paddleboard.

Before swimming, ensure the bag is securely sealed. Some bags offer a separate compartment for electronic devices and keys, so purchasing a high-quality waterproof bag allows you to bring your phone along. We strongly suggest doing so, even if you're trying to disconnect from daily life and work, as it's an additional safety precaution. If needed, you can reach out to loved ones, call for assistance, or navigate back if you become lost..

Place your phone at the very top of the bag, above everything else packed, so we can easily access it without having to dig through the other items.
